ok kids....here's the deal.
Life's been....well, life, lately and it's time to declutter in order to move forward in a better way. I think that includes this blog. If you read this/rely on this as a primary source of communication with me- drop a comment and I'll give you an alternative. If you object to the blog being shut down- leave a comment. Five objections and I'll reconsider.

it's wonderful to look at a small group of people interact and realize that you each bring different perspectives and traits to the mix, but ultimately, you get through together.
(an observation on a particularly hard week at grad school)

I'm beginning to think it's morally wrong to eat tuna. That might be a small exaggeration, but not much....more later, I think.

Some serious grief and repentance going on for how we, particularly Christians, have abused our God-given responsibility for caring for the earth, and how we are recklessly undoing His GOOD work.

Inconsistent people bother me.
I am still trying to learn how to be consistent.

was sorting through old scribbles, in search of a short story from about this time period, that's somehow remarkably relevant again. Haven't found it, but did find a poem.....from Spring 2004, Freshman year at Bryan.

Blue Ink

A body's curled up in a small little nook
while a mind roams a world open wide
for spaces and traces, new faces and places to look
for the Idea-the Idea free and strong, bold and brave
and the pen meets the hand meets the ivory page
where the blue ink flows on.

Reading and Breathing and Story and Truth
growing and learning and fading and blurring
round and round the burning bush
with quiet pause and frenzied dance
the flame hightens and lightens and brightens the trance
while the blue ink flows on.

To the beat of the heart, the rythm of the song
the two become one and the one becomes more:
Life is the dance time carried along
twighlight to dewfall, sunrise to sunset
moonbeam, starshine, circling planets add their light
as the blue ink flows on

The world holds the heart but the heart holds the world
each finding its place as
part of the whole yet the whole of a part
and the words make their way back to the skies
a poet's a fool but the foolish are wise,
from their hands, the blue ink flows on.

To us who waite with listening ears
we sit by the river like statues of stone
straining for voices of elder years
the current is deep and the current is strong
but the shallow eddies enamour the throng
while the blue ink flows ever on.

Who dares to take the leap
beyond the vain and the timid
into the pure waters, untested and deep?
He'll rise down through the darkness, sink up to the light
seeing eyes will be blinded and given their sight

I was news-less for about a week and a half while traveling....and I return to Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme Court.
Any thoughts?
I'm still trying to get a feel for her.
Kudos to President Obama for nominating a Latina.
She appears to be extremely thorough in opinions and take precedents quite seriously, which is a good thing for judges.
She also appears to be rather pragmatic, and as appealing as it may be, I'm not sure pragmatism is the best principle to base justice + government on. However, it's inclusion on the Supreme Court could be rather nice.
Slightly left of center....but then so am I, so I'm not sure what to do with that tidbit. Well, she's probably a bit further left than I am, but still....

taking a few days to be primarily dominated by reading and jotting down notes, to process thoughts.....
there's so much I want to take the time to think through and write well about.

The Church of England
- as related to the writing of L'Engle and Lewis and T.S. Eliot
-Her horror of schism and the resulting wide range of convictions/opinions she contains who are currently trying to bully each other into submission

Family
- the widening perspective I've had lately
-in light of the Trinity

Color and Beauty as rebellion against tyranny (yes, I'm re-reading Reading Lolita in Tehran)

Journey
-it has been just over a year since I was Confirmed in the Church of England.....what does this mean, what has it changed, and why does it matter?
-Trinity is approaching quickly. It was late Trinity-tide in 2007 when I joined an Anglican church, which means it's been nearly two years that this has been the dominant Christian tradition in my life. Why is this important?

From Nicholas Kristof's blog today. This is why I am seriously in love with the man. (yes, I am the sort of girl who develops celebrity crushes on Pulitzer prize winning journalists instead of random actors/athletes/musicians)

Things I don't know how I ever managed to live without:
1) PubMed
2) NPR
3) Annie's Bunnies (chocolate bunny grahams are what's currently in my pantry)

Thoughts on visiting a local church, should you actually want to read something serious.

I managed a tofu pot pie (think chicken pot pie for health-conscious vegetarians) completely from scratch. Including homemade vegetable stock and pie crust. Pie crust- well, we'll have to work on that. But overall....I'm impressed.
